Finding Light in the Midst of Darkness

Bible-based Trauma Healing in Ukraine

In the heart of Ukraine, amidst the turmoil and devastation brought by ongoing conflict, Olha’s* life had been shattered. She had lost her home in Luhansk, her husband to illness, and her son to the war. Each day was a struggle for survival, filled with despair and hopelessness. “I felt like I was drowning in darkness,” Olha recalls. “There was no light, no hope, just endless pain.”

It was in this state of despair that Olha encountered the Bible Society Ukraine’s Trauma Healing program. Led by dedicated facilitators like Tetiana, the program aimed to heal the psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by the war. The program, rooted in biblical principles, provided a safe space for individuals to share their stories, find understanding, and begin their journey towards healing.

Tetiana remembers her first meeting with Olha vividly. “When I first met Olha, I doubted whether we could help her. Her pain seemed unbearable,” Tetiana shares. However, through the sessions, Olha began to change. The program’s use of Metaphoric Associative Cards (MAC) helped participants like Olha express deep inner pain and emotions that were difficult to articulate. “The cards helped me open up and confront my pain,” Olha says. “I began to find peace in my heart and hope for the future.”

The impact of the Trauma Healing program on Olha’s life was profound. By the end of the program, Olha was a transformed person. “Do you remember what I was like when I first came to you? I am a completely different person now,” she told Tetiana. The program not only helped her heal but also restored her faith and hope.

“Hearts melted, became tender, and found healing. Glory to God!”

Olha’s story is just one of many. The Bible Society Ukraine’s Trauma Healing program has reached thousands of individuals across the country, providing them with the tools and support needed to heal from their trauma. “This camp was like a breath of life for me. For the first time in two years, I smiled sincerely from the heart,” shared another participant.

The program’s success lies in its holistic approach, combining psychological support with spiritual healing. By introducing individuals to the Bible, the program helps them find strength and resilience in God’s Word. “Hearts melted, became tender, and found healing. Glory to God!” wrote one facilitator after a session.

Through the dedication of its facilitators and the power of the Bible, the Trauma Healing program continues to bring light and hope to those affected by the war in Ukraine.
