The Bible showing Kenyan children the right way to live

Bible Distribution for Marginalised Children

Thirteen-year-old Wema* used to struggle with friendships, and her struggles were compounded by her tendency to take things that didn’t belong to her. Three years earlier, Wema felt misunderstood and underrated at school, being teased and made fun of regularly. Then her school,  Cheplasei Primary School welcomed a visit from the Kenyan Bible Society team, who gifted Wema with something she dreamed of – a Bible.

She was so happy to receive the Bible, she shared it with her sister. She came to know the Bible stories, and her favourite is the creation story from the book of Genesis. Through this story, Wema came to an understanding of how God created mankind… and also the consequences of sin. Wema no longer steals things which don’t belong to her. She has improved in Christian Religious Education at school, and she has started going to church. At school, her classmates have seen that she is now more responsible, and have learnt how to trust her with their possessions, as friends. Wema is one of many children who are being impacted by the Bible distribution project run by the Bible Society of Kenya and supported by Bible Society Australia.

Mercy*, also 13 exclaimed, “The first time I received the Good News Bible from Bible Society of Kenya, it felt like gold! Most precious tool ever! This was my first Bible and now I know God much than before.”

These Bibles are not only handed out to students, they are also used in their regular Christian Religious Education classes, a subject in the Kenyan school curriculum. As a result, as children open the Bible and engage with its message, they are being impacted by God’s word. Mercy shares that she used to abuse others, and like Wema, her classmates didn’t like her. Today, she shares, “I am so loved and I have learnt to respect people. The Bible has taught me to belong to a fellowship and so have started going to church and helping the needy children around me.”

“This was my first Bible and now I know God much than before.”

The impact of the Bibles handed to the children flows into their families, with one boy sharing, “I hope to get godly instructions from this Bible as well as help my parents know God and understand his word.” Another girl expresses her thanks for the Bible, explaining that she would not have been able to buy one as “… buying is a story of the past.” She knows the value of the Bible and shares, “We will use Bibles especially to know Lord Jesus as our saviour, each one of us in school. At home, I hope to carry this Bible and use to preach it to my parents. Thank you.”

Please pray for Bible Society of Kenya and this project:

  • Pray for creative strategies to help children with scripture engagement activities after Bible distribution.
  • Pray for Kenyans of goodwill to help us dream together to populate schools with Bibles.
  • Pray for the Kenyan Church to occupy schools and help students to know God, grow in him and serve him since the window is open through the goodwill of Kenyan government.
  • Trust God with us for resources to help us distribute Bibles across all the 47 counties in Kenya.
  • Pray for courage to reach hard to reach schools in Kenya.
  • Thank God for a fruitful, impactful 2024! Pray that the Bible Society Kenya team may walk with God and reach the least, last and lost children and youth with the Gospel.
