Ministering to a camp full of cowboys

Chaplain Cam can Open The Bible with campers thanks to the Scripture Grants Program.

You don’t always want a cowboy in your chapel service. But in Camp Chaplain Cam’s case, it’s usually seen as a positive.

Cam ministers on a ranch-style holiday camp, where campers spend time learning to ride and care for horses. So, naturally, his daily service is known as ‘Cowboy Chapel’.

Cam’s camp chaplaincy ministry is resourced through our Scripture Grants Program . Cam, and Chaplains like him, are sent free Bibles and Scripture resources to give away to campers.

More than just horsing around

Cowboy Chapel is a highlight of camp.

It’s a time of the day where campers can start to explore their faith without taking themselves too seriously.

“We sing some fun Christian songs with hilarious actions and someone gives a talk from the Bible,” Cam explains.

Chapel is one of the key times of camp where Cam helps kids Open The Bible.

“It is great to see all the kids really engage with the songs – regardless of their faith background,” he says. “What’s even more encouraging is their engagement with the talk and the Scripture reading.”

Young people come to Christ at camp

But it’s actually back in the cabin where the Bibles are really put to use.

“Each night, the camp’s cabin leaders get the chance to lead a devotional,” Cam says. “And it’s often through the influence of these young leaders that campers grow the most.”

Our cabin leaders get a lot of requests for Bibles,” he reports. “They gave away over 50 Bibles during the Easter school holidays alone!”

The influence of these camps – and the Bibles kids go home with – can’t be underestimated.

Young people are coming to Christ at our camps,” says Cam. “And the resources that this grant provides are what they need to continue in their faith journey.”

“Thank you Bible Society!”
