Read the Bible with… Shane Rogerson

Shane is the Lead Pastor of St. Matt’s Prahran in Melbourne.

Where do you live and go to church?

I live and gather with God’s people in Prahran, Melbourne.

What was the first book of the Bible you ever read?

I started in Genesis and got bogged down in Leviticus, so I skipped to find out what happened in the end (in Revelation) – whilst it was confusing I learned that Jesus wins.

Name a Bible character you resonate with and why.

I love Jonathan’s armour bearer in 1 Sam 14. He is not even named but he is a great model of a wholehearted, faith-filled follower: “Do all that you have in mind, go ahead, I am with heart and soul”. I want to be that kind of servant.

What’s one thing from the Bible that’s stuck in your brain at the moment?

Galatians 4:19. What does it mean for me “to labour [as Paul did] so that Christ is formed in God’s people”?

Name one part of the Bible you keep coming back to again and again and why.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10: But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

My ministry is strongest when I realise God’s grace is sufficient and my weakness is a prerequisite!

Describe one of your Bible reading failures and what you learnt.

It took me a long to time to stop operating in a functional belief that I am justified by ‘quiet time’ and realise that it’s grace that leads me to Bible delight, not Bible duty.

What advice would you give someone struggling to read the Bible each day?

1. Keep struggling
2. Pray for Bible delight
3. Turn off your electronic devices
4. Read until it begins to read you.
