Read the Bible with… Karl Faase

Where do you live and go to church?

I live in Kirrawee, in the southern suburbs of Sydney and go to church at a new church plant called H3O in Dee Why, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

What are you reading in the Bible at the moment?

I follow the Scripture Union notes – Encounter with God – and at present they are in 2 Corinthians.

What’s one thing from the Bible that’s stuck in your brain at the moment?

Pauls encouragement of the Philippian Christians to be “content,” which seems like a clear teaching to be relaxed, and yet his reflection on his striving with all his might in another section of the same letter. Contentment is beyond having a relaxed and contented demeanour.

Name one part of the Bible you keep coming back to again and again and why.

The stories and teaching of Jesus, they are foundational for all of life.

Describe one of your Bible reading failures and what you learned.

I have never really thought about “failing” in relation to reading the Bible. I find there are times when reading becomes a chore, a task to tick where I’m fulfilling a requirement and not reflecting on what I’m reading, those times I fail to be influenced as I should.

What advice would you give someone struggling to read the Bible each day?

I always have three simple pieces of advice: find a place, a spot in your house, decide on a time and commit to a method, then make it a daily habit. Without a place, time and method, Bible reading will remain a nice ideal without becoming a regular discipline.

And just for fun, if you were a monster what would be your defining feature?

A monster who is consistent and persistent – will not give up.
